God is Good

Please understand I do not wish to offend.  But here's the thing.  You know that little chant-y response thing we do in Christian circles where someone says 'God is good' and everyone chimes back 'all the time', and then the first person says 'and all the time' ...you see where I'm going with this?

I was actually preaching one time at a church I had been invited to speak at, and at one point in my message I inadvertently used the phrase 'God is good'.  I mean, it's true right? But before I knew what was happening the whole crowd yelled back 'all the time'!  I wasn't ready for it.  Actually scared me a little.  But I got with the program and said back, a little half-heartedly 'and all the time'...and they did their little 'God is good' response deal.

And before I realized it, the next thing I heard myself say was, 'OK, now that you got that out of your system, lets continue'.  Needless to say, I did offend some people that night.  It's just that I'm not into the whole Christian-eese mantra thing.  I don't think saying certain things a certain way really makes all that much difference.  Truth is truth.

But today, I had this thought.  God is good.  And He's good all the time.  And what a relief that is.  Because most of the time the rest of us are doing a pretty good job at screwing stuff up and we need God's goodness at work in us.  And we need it all the time.

I just don't think we need to be chanting about it.  That is all.

Hey, I get where you're coming from, but...
This world chants ALL kinds of garbage ALL the time. Our youth especially, need to declare, chant, scream, talk, live, whisper or/and pray God's truth!

We need not to be afraid to speak out even if it's a chant!

Still...chanting alone changes nothing.

i have to say that i agree with you, jeff.

it's kind of like using cliches. sure, they are cliches because they are true and time has proven them to be so, but that doesn't mean that as a writer i should not come up with new and engaging ways of saying things that need to said without putting both mine and my reader's minds into autopilot.
